McAfee vs Windows Defender vs Guardio and small antivirus

A plain comparison of the main antivirus tools, with the best setup for each kind of user.

Short answer: for most home users, Microsoft Defender (built into Windows) is enough. Add a free second-opinion scanner and browser protection. Pay for a suite only if you want extras such as VPN, identity monitoring or parental controls.

Microsoft Defender

Built into Windows 10 and 11 with real-time and cloud protection, tamper protection, a firewall, SmartScreen and ransomware folder protection. It has no ads or renewals and a low impact on speed. Its weak spots are fewer extras and web protection that works best in Edge.

McAfee

A paid suite that covers Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. Depending on plan and region it can include a VPN, identity monitoring, a password manager, scam detection and parental controls. Watch for auto-renewal at a higher price, trial-only tools on cheaper plans and upsell pop-ups. It is often pre-installed on new PCs as a trial.

Guardio

A browser extension for Chromium-based browsers that blocks phishing and scam sites and warns about risky downloads and extensions. It cannot scan your PC or remove malware, so it complements antivirus rather than replacing it. Free browser guards from Malwarebytes and Bitdefender cover the basics.

Rules to follow

  1. Never run two real-time antivirus programs at once.
  2. Check renewal price, device count and refund window before buying.
  3. Remove unused pre-installed trials and confirm Defender is on in Windows Security.
  4. Download only from the vendor’s site or the Microsoft Store.
  5. Keep Windows, your browser and apps updated.
